Controller Maps Free Tax Prep Services for Angelenos
LOS ANGELES — Tax season can be stressful, but L.A. Controller Ron Galperin wants to help ease people’s minds with his updated map of free tax preparation service locations in the greater Los Angeles area. Galperin’s map, available on his website, lacontroller.org, details local resources that can help Angelenos meet the April 15 filing deadline. Tax prep service locations include community based organizations, public libraries, schools and churches.
“As the taxpayers’ watchdog, it’s my job to look after the financial well-being of the City and its residents,” said L.A. Controller Ron Galperin. “While my office works to make the City more efficient and effective, we also seek to provide Angelenos with useful tools and information that can enhance their lives.”
Galperin’s tax prep map is available to everyone, but is specifically aimed at individuals and families who may qualify for the state and federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). According to the most recent data from the California Department of Community Services and Development, nearly $2 billion in EITC funds go unclaimed each year. Households who earn $55,000 or less may be eligible to receive up to $9,000 in cash back through the EITC benefit, but a tax return must be filed.
The tax prep map’s location information is sourced from Free Tax Prep Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Public Library system and the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The map is part of Galperin’s ongoing efforts to use data, technology and innovation to help Angelenos better understand how the City operates and connect them with important public resources and services.
